A Less Social Society Becoming Shy Shyness, resulting from the rapid changes of technology and society in the US, implies the problems of solitude, alienation and bad health among Americans (Epstein A1). Philip G. Zimbardo, a professor in Stanford University, states that the causes for the growing numbers of shy people can be categorized into three sections. First, automatic services urge people to do everything themselves naturally. Second, the revolution in electric appliances and electronic entertainment makes social interaction not entirely necessary. Third, as the nature of family life has changed and the fear of crime has risen, people have become isolated from each other. With the rate of divorce reaching to 50 percent and parents working more than ever, children are deprived of their chances to communicate with their family members as they did before (qtd. in Epstein A10).
