Owing to the increases and improvements of the rapid technological and social changes, the numbers of shy people are growing rapidly in America. This phenomenon would signify that Americans are being more isolated not only mentally but also physically. It says that it is a big harm to a healthy society (Epstein A1).
Stanford University professor Philip G. Zimbardo thinks there are three factors contributing to this rising tide of shyness. First, automation, it would reduce our social contacts. Second, the revolution in personal computers and home electronic entertainment, they would do interaction by sending E-mail at home instead of participating in social activities in social places. Third, the changing nature of family life and rising fear of crime are shutting people off from each other. All entertainments are organized for children so that they don¡¦t learn the skills of improving relation from the play-ground. Furthermore, children would be deprived of their communication with their parents who are busy working (qtd. in
